Ieva Estere Barkāne

Born: May 29, 1998

Born and raised in Riga. Graduated from Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music School No. 1 (2013) and Riga French Lyceum (2017), and sang in the choir Balsis. In 2017, she was admitted to the Dramatic Theatre Acting course at the Latvian Academy of Culture led by Indra Roga and Mihails Gruzdovs, graduating in 2021. She further supplemented her education through the AFS exchange program in Italy, in Colle di Val d’Elsa.

“Ieva develops steadily, harmoniously, and without setbacks. She has a sense of humor and very strong powers of observation. She grasps things quickly, thinks sharply, and in this regard is a master. Ieva has her own internal standard by which she measures—good or bad. She is intelligent, an intellectual, and by nature gently ironic. Ieva will not settle until she is convinced that something meets her standard. And she is also the course’s strongest internal critic—and if she says: ‘No, please, not like this!’, it is worth thinking about—it probably means something is not right and needs to be done differently,”—this was the first professional characterization given by her teacher Indra Roga.

What can you do with talent! This is what one calls a striking entrance into theatre.

Ieva Estere Barkāne’s impeccable and inspiring performances make one simply sigh in admiration: She is wonderful! Critics then go home and try to find more professional terms to describe this “wonderfulness.”

With sparkling enthusiasm and confidence, Ieva Estere Barkāne creates the impression that there is nothing easier or more enjoyable on stage than conjuring yet another role perfectly fused in form and content—no matter how complex it may be. Whether she has to ski across a bare floor in slalom or cross-country boots, portray blindness, or, in the name of love, create an almost gravity-defying state and fly—she does it. This is done—give me the next task!
