THE DAY POURED AWAY
You, the city, the open-air theatre, where scenes from the life of the people are performed with zest and passion, tell me – do you know how to play dice?
Three friends – Pasty (they named him The Pasty because he liked everything fatty), Henninen (because that’s his family name) and Marshal (so christened because of a heated speech he once gave on Mannerheim) – have almost nothing and need almost nothing. But they do have the city, or rather a little more than a square kilometer, in the working-class district of Kallio in Helsinki. And they have each other. Romantic philosophers, battered bottle companions, rude idlers, fine, sensitive souls, fools or wise men – it depends on how the city sees them, because they don’t give a clear answer themselves. It is a tragicomic journey around the clock without a definite destination, where the most important part is the journey itself.
The play will be based on the book Park Life (2004) by Mikko Rimminen. Rimminen’s works are special for their unique, specific language and the many new words introduced by the author. The book has been widely acclaimed and translated into Dutch, German, Swedish, Russian and Czech, and in 2009 the excellent Latvian translation by Maima Grīnberga was presented to Latvian readers.
