What is stronger than the love of a true Irish thug for his homeland, father, mother and family? Stronger than a sense of duty and justice? It is the love for one’s cat. No one who has wronged Wee Thomas will be left intact after Lieutenant Padraic of the Irish National Liberation Army finds out. Almost no one.
The Lieutenant of Inishmore is a dark comedy written in 2001 by Irish-born English playwright Martin McDonagh, full of harsh jokes, misunderstandings and unexpected twists. The award-winning play has been produced around the world, including on Broadway. One of today’s most provocative playwrights says of his work: “I walk that line between comedy and cruelty because I think one illuminates the other. We’re all cruel, aren’t we? That’s what drama, since the Greeks, has dealt with.”
The production premiered at the Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival in 2020 and has returned to the Valmiera Theatre repertoire.
