About the performance

For seven years, Emma and her husband’s friend Jerry regularly meet in an apartment and hide their love affair from Emma’s husband Robert. The many faces of infidelity – doubt, euphoria, anxiety, ecstasy and frustration.

“What fascinated me about the play is that the concept of betrayal is not unambiguous. Who is really being betrayed? You yourself or the other? And what for? I want to search for the answers: what is lost in betrayal, and what is gained,” says the director Inese Mičule.

Pinter is a master of ambiguity, he takes the trivial love triangle to a much deeper and more general level of reflection. Critics praise the play’s virtuoso structure, its laconic dialogue and also its painful viewing experience, because the playwright has ruthlessly revealed man’s capacity to be brutally cruel to another.

Harold Pinter (1930–2008), Nobel Laureate, is one of the most influential British playwrights of the 20th century. Also a screenwriter, actor, director and human rights advocate.
