A photographer, an obituary writer, a stripper and a doctor – criss-cross greedily trying to get closer to each other, but wounded by frustration, they are thrown back into their loneliness, with deeply bruised souls.
“The fates of four strangers collide in a storm of passion, love and lust. This is a rough story of power and love, of truth and lies, of lust and instinct. This play shows that words can pierce like a knife and that the truth is sometimes more painful than pretence and lies. Patrick Marber’s Closer contains direct and sometimes harsh language, where boundaries are crossed through modern eyes,” says director Tom Treinis.
Since Patrick Marber wrote his urban passion rondo in 1997 – both a romantic comedy and a brutal anatomy of modern love – Closer has never left the theatre stages around the world. In 2001, director Oļģerts Kroders staged it for the first time in Latvia at the Dailes Theatre.
The play became most popular after Hollywood caught on to it and in 2004 Mike Nichols’ film of the same title was released. It became a synonym for the beautiful faces of Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Clive Owen, complete with a wistful soundtrack by Irish songwriter Damien Rise, which was released simultaneously.
